Letter From the Superintendent

Dear Iroquois West Community Unit School District Stakeholders:

The Illinois State Board of Education is monitoring the rapidly changing coronavirus health issue in our state, nation, and across the world.  The ISBE is working closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the Governor’s Office, the General Assembly, and stakeholders to address all education issues related to the virus.  The ISBE is actively updating their guidance as authorities learn more about the virus and its impact on the state of Illinois.

As with any newly emerging infectious disease, knowledge evolves over time.  The ISBE is strongly encouraging school districts to check guidance resources frequently for any potential updates.

Here are some frequently asked questions with short answers.

  1. Where can the most up-to-date resources and guidance on the coronavirus be found?  The ISBE is strongly encouraging school districts to establish open lines of communication with their local health departments.
  2. Who would make the decision to close schools?  Iroquois West CUSD #10 would act in accordance with guidance from the IDPH and local public health department, in making the final decision as to whether or not conditions require the closure of schools.
  3. Are schools being advised to close at this time?  No.  The IDPH does not currently recommend closing schools.
  4. Some school districts have received requests from families wanting to “self-quarantine” their students with no proven medical reasons.  Should these students receive unexcused absences?  A parent may hold their student(s) out of school for health and safety reasons.  These absences will not be counted as unexcused.

If you have any suggestions or additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  It is our responsibility to keep our students, families, and communities safe.

Robert B. Bagby, Superintendent
