Fact of the Day: On this day in 1957, Sputnik, a Soviet launched satellite, successfully orbited the earth. It could be seen by Americans and by the world. It was this moment that spurred the Space Race and pitted the United States versus the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union would have only marginal victories in space after Sputnik but, as we all know, the United States space program would land a man on the moon, send out probes across our solar system, create and use the Hubble Telescope and help with the construction of the International Space Station.
